Data Scientist at IBM. A domain expert with a deep understanding of communications, marketing, and media. Utilizing a data first methodology, I tell stories with data. A big-picture thinker, I have a knack for team building and continuously searching for the next volunteer opportunity; that and the best donuts/tacos in town.

telling stories with data…

MY PASSION

It sounds cliché, “love what you do, and you’ll never work another day in your life.” I can honestly say this to true. Data Analysis is my passion, and once I found it, I haven’t worked since then.

TRUE CREATIVE

It’s rare when during a random conversation, I don’t have an “a-ha” moment that can help a friend/colleague with their project. You know, the “hey, why don’t you try this” or “oh my gosh, it would be great if you…”.

DATA NERD

We use and produce so much data daily. I review it, clean it, analyze, it, and model it for more significant insights. Sometimes, I just examine and produce great-looking visual dashboards.

VISUALIZATION

While important to have accurate, valid data, we need to represent those insights in a way that can inform the conversation and add value to our design making. What better way than with great-looking visualizations.

professional skills

Let’s face it, over the years, you pick up a think or two. Data Science and new models are items to be abreast off. You’ll find some of those skills below along with a few others picked up along the way.

GIT, UNIX, & RELATIONAL DATABASES

GIT, UNIX, & RELATIONAL DATABASES

  • Gather, store, and organize data using essential data science toolkits: SQL, Git, and UNIX.
MACHINE LEARNING, MODELING TECHNIQUES, & BIG DATA

MACHINE LEARNING, MODELING TECHNIQUES, & BIG DATA

  • Utilized supervised and unsupervised learning techniques through the application of various modeling techniques such as classification, regression, and clustering.
CRITICAL THINKING & SYNTHESIS

CRITICAL THINKING & SYNTHESIS

  • Analysis and modeling skills were put into practice with real-world data problems in fields like finance, marketing, and public policy.
COMMUNICATIONS PROFESSIONAL

What is communications?  I believe everything we do is communications.  We are constantly communicating whether we are conscious of it or not.  Think about when we walk in to a super market or classy department store.  What do we see?  Smell?  What’s the ambience – look/feel?  We’re communicating with all our senses – sight, touch, smell, hearing, taste, etc…  Etc.?

Video production has become a big part of any marketing or communications plan, and at that, it has changed while changing the rules of the game.  Great video is no longer needed.  Great story telling is now the norm.  Here are a few platforms that I know, utilize, and understand well.

  • Creative Direction
  • Concept Development
  • Ability to manage several, simultaneous projects (w/ Asana.com – totally love them)
  • Ability to create internal/external communication process, procedures, and implement through out an organization
  • Conceptualize & design strategies w/ input from key stakeholders
  • There’s so much more in communications that we need to be concerned with, this list is just a bit of what I’m proficient at
VIDEO/MOTION PRODUCTION

Video production has become a big part of any marketing or communications plan, and at that, it has changed while changing the rules of the game.  Great video is no longer needed.  Great story telling is now the norm.  Here are a few platforms that I know, utilize, and understand well.

  • Final Cut Pro
  • Motion
  • Adobe Premier (better in FCP though)
  • Adobe After Effects (better in Motion though)
STILL IMAGERY

Not only do I know and understand photography well, I teach photography through Professional Photographers of America (PPA).  PPA is the countries oldest photography association.  With 24 over years experience.

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Lightroom
DATA ANALYSIS & PYTHON

DATA ANALYSIS & PYTHON

  • Perform visual and statistical analysis on data using Python and its associated libraries and tools.
VISUALIZATION, PRESENTATION & REPORTING

VISUALIZATION, PRESENTATION & REPORTING

  • Created reproducible presentations and reports and use data visualization tools to present findings to key stakeholders
WEB DEVELOPMENT

I learned Flash when Adobe had Flash 3.0, that was a horrible way to design websites.  I’m so glad we have better systems to help us develop our websites, the hub of our communications.  Here are a few that I know, but WordPress is my CMS of choice.

  • WordPress
  • Adobe Dreamweaver
  • CSS/HTML/SEO
  • Joomla/Drupal (way better at WordPress though)
AUDIO PRODUCTION

When I’m asked what makes a great video, my answer is always the same “great audio”.  I learned audio because I create stories through video.  If it isn’t coloring the audio, warming up the tones, or sound design it’s something else audio related that makes a great video.  I’m more familiar with Logic, but Audition has it’s place.

  • Logic
  • Adobe Audition
GRAPHIC DESIGN

I would probably add Photoshop to this area of graphic design.  I use quite a bit of imagery when designing graphics.  That seems to be the trend right now.  I’m also way more familiar with InDesign than Illustrator.  I enjoy layout design and InDesign is my go to tool for creating  brand design, however, in Illustrator, it will take me a bit longer to get a design going.   Organization and organizing graphics, is what I do best.  Having assets readily available for design speeds up the process.

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe InDesign
MISC

The misc. tools listed below are your typical office software tools.  FileMaker Pro is probably the least known.  I, for fun, design online and mobile apps but before, they were called databases.  They’re just slicker and cooler now.

  • FileMaker Pro
  • Microsoft Office
  • Apple Numbers/Pages/Keynote
  • Mac/PC (really do prefer Mac)
  • Numchuk skills
  • Bow hunting skills
  • Computer hacking skills (this is kinda true)
  • Well, maybe not the last three :0)
